A traceability item is an issue, subject, or problem that needs to be taken into account while working on subsequent project aspects. Typically, the artifacts in project management are text documents and the items are their parts addressing certain issues. In HDL designs created under restrictions of safety standards, the artifacts might be the requirement documents, HDL sources, documents describing test scenarios, the testbench part of HDL sources, files logging test results, etc. The items, in turn, can be the exact functionalities specified by the requirements, implemented in HDL sources, and verified by the testbench.
