What is group synthesis? What is incremental synthesis? How are both used in HES-DVM?

ANSWER

HES-DVM supports following two types of design synthesis.

  • Incremental synthesis provides a fast compilation and the minimum re-compilation time. HES-DVM synthesizes the user design incrementally, by default. During incremental synthesis the design is decomposed and each module instance is synthesized separately. Thus there is no need for re-synthesizing the entire design when only some parts of the design are changed. Incremental synthesis also aids in the partitioning processes.

  • Group synthesis offers better optimization results for units that are unchanged. In HES-DVM it is possible to define groups of instances that should be synthesized together (Synthesis Groups). The group is synthesized as one unit, resulting in one optimized EDIF netlist. Group synthesis is used to group entire IP-Cores that have been reused.
