How do I set an external text editor program as the editor for coding in Active-HDL?

Description

I want to use an external editor program to write the code in Active-HDL. Can I specify my own editor?

Solution

You can specify an external text editor program as the default editor in Active-HDL from the Preferences dialog box.

  1. Go to Tools | Preferences | Environment | Tools | File Tools.

  2. Create a new entry, using the button.

  3. Define options in Menu commands section.

  4. Check the Set as default editor for C/HDL code and external files checkbox.

When the Set as default editor for C/HDL code and external files option is enabled, the tool selected in the File tools list will be set as a default editor for opening C/HDL source files or external files, i.e. files of types not registered in the Active-HDL environment. This setting applies to the files being opened from the Files tab of the Design Browser, or by using the Push option in the Block Diagram Editor. It also applies to the Open option invoked from the context menu of special text blocks on block diagrams. You can still edit files in their native editors by using the Open option of the file context menu.

Note: The Active-HDL text Editor is still the default editor while stepping through source code and debugging your design.
